The South and Southeast Asian Languages and Cultures (SSEALC) program at UCLA was established in 1994 to provide students with a unique experience learning Filipino, Hindi-Urdu, Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese. The program has grown steadily over the years and today it is one of the largest programs of its kind at any University. Although these languages are considered to be LCTLs (Less Commonly Taught Languages), most of the SSEALC classes are very large and in great demand. Vietnamese, Filipino and Hindi-Urdu are oversubscribed and extremely popular on campus. Thai and Indonesian are smaller programs within SSEALC and yet exhibit remarkable consistency and impressive enrollments in comparison to similar programs around the country.

The SSEALC program constantly updates curriculum design, methodology and implementation. The program is known to be highly productive and innovative. The instructors are all very enthusiastic, dedicated and heavily involved in research. They engage the local diasporic community and encourage their students to interact with different communities. Active in their peer organizations, they are a guiding and inspirational source for their students and congenial colleagues of a cohesive group concerned about academic excellence.
